Where beauty meets nonviolence

A Guide to Vegan, Non-Toxic Bedding and Mattresses

The comfort and safety of our own homes unfortunately masks a reality that may be harmful both to ourselves and to the creatures with whom we share the planet. In our places of sanctuary where we sleep or relax, we are exposed to soft furnishings, beddings and mattresses that have undergone intensive chemical treatment and have been made with materials that harm animals. We may have accepted that we had to buy what was on offer at mainstream stores, but now we are re-assessing our lifestyle and the impact of the choices we make. The truth is, you really don’t have to surround yourself with materials that are manufactured in cruel, industrial processes that harm animals and subject people to toxic chemicals. There is a shift in the demand for materials that are ethical, non-toxic and cruelty-free. The more that people demand these alternatives, the more they become available. A lifestyle change can become much bigger than you.

Here is a quick guide to non-toxic, vegan bedding and mattresses including materials to avoid and recommended replacements:

First, start by looking for certifications such as OEKO-TEX, MADE SAFE, Vegan Action, and PETA-approved to ensure product safety, sustainability, and vegan compliance.

Avoid mattresses that use animal-based glues and ensure there are no toxic adhesives or chemical sprays.

Opt for mattress covers and bedding made with GOTS organic cotton or bamboo for softness and temperature regulation.

Use natural fibers to allow the skin to breathe and avoid synthetic off-gassing.

Some of the common materials to Avoid in Vegan and Non-Toxic Mattresses include:

Animal-derived materials such as wool, silk, feathers, and down.

Polyurethane foams and synthetic foams containing petroleum-based chemicals.

Polyester or synthetic materials blended with non-vegan fillers.

Chemical flame retardants like PBDEs, chlorinated tris, and organophosphates which are toxic.

Glues, solvents, or adhesives that may contain animal derivatives.

Conventional cotton grown with pesticides (for non-organic).

Synthetic fills that off-gas VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Non-Toxic, Vegan Alternatives include:

Organic cotton (GOTS-certified) for covers and fill: breathable, hypoallergenic, and sustainable.

Bamboo fabric: naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial, moisture-wicking, and requires less water than cotton.

Linen: breathable, durable, and made from flax plant.

Eucalyptus silk (TENCEL Lyocell): a cruelty-free silky alternative made through closed-loop sustainable processes.

Natural or organic latex (plant-based, GOLS-certified Dunlop latex): durable, allergen-resistant, and vegan if wool-free.

Coconut coir fibers for firmness and breathability.

Recycled polyester (low off-gassing synthetic fiber) for added durability and breathability.

Plant-based memory foams (soy, castor oil-based) as alternatives to traditional petroleum-based foams.

Mattress coils made from recycled steel for support and airflow in hybrid mattresses.

Mattresses constructed without chemical flame retardants or that use natural flame retardant minerals like hydrated silica.
