Learning to Walk in Beauty: How to Bring Balance Back Home

There is a Navajo saying, “may you walk in beauty,” that speaks of a spiritual way of life that involves thinking and acting in conscious balance with the world.

“With beauty before me may I walk

With beauty behind me may I walk

With beauty above me may I walk

With beauty all around me, may I walk.”

“hozho naasha” translated from Navajo/Dineh language by Patricia Anne Davis

The path of walking in beauty involves coming back to a more conscious relationship with the world. But how do we walk this path in the everyday to allow us to return to the beauty that can be found in our lives? One way is to pay attention to our surroundings and to consciously create environments that reflect the earth’s beauty back to us.

Navajo traditional teachings emphasize that walking the path of beauty is a lifelong commitment, an intentional way of living that persists despite ups and downs. The path of beauty isn’t an easy path, but it is a rewarding one. It is a path that gives back a sense of confidence and peace. It requires making your choices intentionally and always staying true to your responsibility to your community and the earth.

Many spiritual traditions emphasize beauty and harmony as key to the spiritual path. Beauty in spiritual traditions is deeper than aesthetics; it is about  balance, good judgement, and finding grace even in adversity. Religions and spiritual traditions such as Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism emphasize moving in harmony and balance with the world’s rhythms, while staying true to an inner moral purpose.

Walking in beauty is a teaching that reminds us that we need to explore how our own inner world influences the outer world, and weigh our choices on every level, from the mundane, to the aesthetic, to the spiritual. One important thing to remember is that these choices have a significant relationship to each other. We don’t make choices that are simply practical, or aesthetic, or spiritual, our choices combine all these elements, whatever spiritual path we may follow, whether it is more secular or religious.

At Earth Science Design, we support people with the practical and philosophical tools to transition to a more beautiful and conscious lifestyle, focusing on interior and external design and other lifestyle adjustments involving vegan, conscious, sustainable living that help people to seek the peace of mind and harmony that comes with making choices that are in alignment with your highest values.
